Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. While as many as 85 percent of teenagers are affected to some degree, it also affects adults in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. Many cases may respond to simple prescription remedies, but others may be more severe and require stronger medications. The conventional wisdom of letting acne “run its course” because you will “grow out of it” isn’t always a good idea. Delays in treatment can result in permanent scarring leading to emotional and social distress. Scarring may be severe enough to require laser and other treatments.
